Psychology Schools Can Prepare You for Professional Practice

by Michael Bustamante

Psychology Schools, colleges, and universities provide degree studies to prepare for professional practices of all kinds with various objectives. The study of psychology is a science with much diversity, ranging from the molecular mental processes to social and cultural behavior. Psychology Schools offer an array of courses to give students an overview of the psychology discipline.

Psychology Schools and colleges allow students to combine courses for acquiring Associate of Arts (AA) degrees for minors or majors in psychology. Vocational and technical certificates are available for personal interests. Bachelor, master, and doctorate studies will allow students to pursue advanced degrees.

Psychology Schools provide basic courses required to develop a thorough understanding of general, applied, developmental, social, and cultural psychology. Classes may include human sexuality, child psychology, abnormal behavior, behavioral sciences, research, human services, and psychology of adjustment. Students will also study anatomy and physiology, along with mathematics, statistics, and other related Liberal Arts and Sciences subjects.

Bachelor degrees in psychology prepare for practicing psychoanalytic counseling to groups and individuals based on the principles of Freudian psychodynamics. Instruction will entail self-analysis, personality theory, dream analysis, and free association. Students will also delve into subjects of transference theory and techniques, developmental processes, practice management, and professional standards and ethics, among others.

Master of Science in Psychology (MS) degrees will require additional courses in development and applications of psychological and psychoanalytical theories and methods, and psychodynamic principles of psychological sciences. Specializations in psychology prepare students for applying principles and theories to real situations, and for conducting research and data management.

Graduate programs for master and doctorate degrees provide specializations in areas of general psychology, counseling studies, organizational psychology, general human services, mental health counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, and educational psychology.
